I absolutely adore fanfiction; there is something to be said for being able to create written works without having to jump through the real-world hoops of editing and publishing. It can allow for amazing creative freedom, even if the author isn't using his/her own characters. Of course, because fanfiction is such a public internet phemonenon, there is no quality control on sites such as Fanfiction.net, and you really have to be willing to wade through the crap to find the stories that really shine. I've tried to assemble as many of those as possible here. Most of these stories can be read by anybody, but there are a few lemons (i.e. sexual content, younger readers) listed because I feel that they deserve as much merit as a genera as any other fic. The problem with lemon fics is that 99.9% of them are terribly written in every aspect. Occasionally though you will find one that is well-written, true to the characters, and tasteful (let's not forget tasteful--that's the really important factor), and I feel it's important to give those very rare stories some attention. I have ratings marked for all these stories, many of them provided by the authors themselves. Not all "R" fics are lemons. Where the story has lemon content, I mention it in the summary. Please pay attention to the ratings; I am not responsible for anything inappropriate to your age that you may read. That said, enjoy the stories! Authors: If you see your story here and you do not want it listed, please let me know. Readers: If you find a broken link, please tell me and I'll try to track down where the fic wandered off to. Thanks! Updated July 2007 Rurouni Kenshin | Ranma 1/2 | Gunsmith Cats | Inuyasha | Fruits Basket | Detective Conan | Harry Potter | Blade of the Immortal The Zaibatsu Project by Nekotsuki -- An excellent AU set in a Cyber-Punk inspired version of near-future Tokyo. Kenshin, and ex-street samurai and brilliant programmer, is the creator of the legendary AI sentry program Battousai, which defends Zaibatsu's most sensitive databases. When an unlikely hacker becomes the only person to have ever survived an encounter with Battousai, Kenshin must dive again into the dangerous world of corporate politics and murder he swore he'd left behind to save her. A fantasic unfolding story, the newest chapters can be found in Nekotsuki's LiveJournal for the project.
A Strong Will by Bakabokken -- A well-researched and fantasitcally detailed Bakumatsu-era story centering on Kenshin's struggle to keep the promise he made to Tomoe: to live. Can that promise withstand the politics of war, and his increasingly bloody role in it?
Wondefully written battle sequences make this pieces an especially good read. Tanabata Jasmine by Nekotsuki--After the Kyoto arc the Kamiya dojo
is enjoying a brief moment of piece. On the holiday Tanabata, Kenshin goes looking for some flowers for Kaoru. What he finds
is a "flower" merchant with less than honorable intentions...and drugged sake. Now Kenshin has been kidnapped and
taken to Kyoto. Can the Kenshin-gumi get to him in time? This is a fantastic action/adventure story, with solid and insightful character
writing. A great read ^_^
For This Dojo's Honor by DQBunny--Set after the conclusion of the RK manga, Kaoru is still struggling to keep her family's style alive. She comes to the painful realization that her lack of students has nothing to do with Battousai--the problem lies with her. An excellent exploration of Kaoru's character and her identity as a swordswoman.
Love and Duty by DQBunny--RK takes a fairytale
spin in this story. To quote the author: "In a severe case of fractured fairy tales, Kenshin winds up in a position where
he is knitting 12 shirts for his "brothers," who gets swept off his feet by the last person he expects - the Empress of
Japan."
A Good Man by LadyGuardianPhoenix--This beautiful one-shot explores a romantic turning point in Kaoru and Kenshin's relationship. One rainy night Kenshin's dreams are sending him into intense despair, and he seeks out Kaoru, who without words opens her heart to him, and he responds in kind. The writing style here is fantastic, and intense character development is achieved without either character ever speaking a single word. A wonderful piece.
The Princess Bride: Kenshin Style by Akari Sennyami--I'm usually not a big fan of cross-overs, but this fic is an exception :) Just as the title says, this story takes elements of PB and uses them to build a funny, touching, and very well-written Kenshin and Kaoru story, with the other RK characters playing amusing roles of their own ^_^
Dancing Plums and 8th Grade Literature by Imbrium Iridium--This AU fic has one of the more peculiar titles I've seen for a story, but it suits this wonderfully written and philosophically deep version of the RK story, set in the modern era. The varying personality of Kenshin from the original series plays a very important role in this storyline, which is intriguingly summed up by the authoress: "Two years ago, Ken was Kenshin, the young college student with a strong family life and friends that would never betray him. All that shattered with the bark of a gun. Who is Ken, really?" Warning for younger readers: some implied sexual content.
Prelude to a Nightmare by amamiya--In the original
manga, Kenshin gathers his friends in the garden and tells them the long story of his role in the Bakumatsu. This fic presents this tale as if Kenshin were actually speaking, nicely translating the manga's visuals into the character's words. Nicely written, with insightful reactions from the other characters as he tells his story. Well worth reading :)
The Bridal Discussion by RiikiTikiTavi--Kaoru and Kenshin's
wedding night...which doesn't go as you might expect -_-;; As you've probably guessed,
this is a lemon fic, but it has two great things going for it: the superb writing of the characters and it's humor, which
will have you rolling on the floor ^_^
Against a Sea of Troubles by Haku Baikou--This is a wandering years fic, set about six months after Toba-Fushimi. Kenshin nearly drowns helping the survivors of a shipwreck and he is rescued by an old man named Noriya...the father of a man Kenshin killed while he was still a hitokiri. Kenshin is in serious emotional turmoil in this story, and HB has done a fantastic job exploring Kenshin's complex psychological transition from Battousai to Rurouni.
Recovery by Haku Baikou--Megumi's view of events directly
following the end of the Kyoto arc, when Kenshin is recovering from his wounds. This fic has amazing detail and is
a great exploration of character interrelationships, especially between Megumi and Kenshin.
My Life by Fitz--One of those rare AU (Alternate
Universe) fics that's well worth reading. This is a modern version of Himura Kenshin, a boy trying to make it through
college with the weight of a very troubled past hanging around his neck. Told in first-person POV, it's a very realistic
exploration of Kenshin's character, and one I highly recommend.
Evening Encounter by Fitz--A seemingly random encounter
between Hitokiri Battousai and Okita Souji after the conclusion of the Bakumatsu leads to some surprising character insights.
A very nicely written little piece :)
Broken Pieces by Linay--Easily the best AU Kenshin fic
that has ever been written, period. Kenshin is a modern-day assassin in Kyoto and has been for over twelve years. Feared
throughout the underworld, he serves the mysterious will of the Choshu organization, but that begins to change when he is assigned Kamiya Kaoru, a girl with strange abilities, as a target. Instead of killing her, he spares her life...and becomes her guardian. A beautifully written exploration of the relationship between Kenshin and Kaoru, with plenty of action and adventure to go around ^_^
An Unexpected Lesson by Conspirator--This fic is set in Kenshin's
wandering years. He's found his way to the southern island of Kyushuu, and one day he rescues a traveling Kabuki troupe from
bandits. It turns out their "onnagata" (a man who plays a woman's role in Kabuki) was injured in the attack and
they need a replacement. Poor Kenshin is just delicate-looking enough to fill the role...and they basically guilt-trip him
into it. All the while he has to hide his true identity as Battousai, not an easy thing when some of the troupe members
were former Bakumatsu soldiers and/or Kyoto residents. This is a fun and wonderfully detailed fic, well worth a read :)
Descent into Madness by Conspirator--Neither the manga
or anime truly explored how the young Kenshin adapted to city life...and became the Ishin Shishi's top assassin. This fic
fills this hole nicely, with great detail and character insight.
Light of the Snow Red Village by Akai Kitsune--This
is an interesting AU fic spanning the length of the RK timeline. Tomoe does not die in the Forest of Barriers; while she
is later killed by Kenshin, for a time they are married and have a daughter. After the death of his wife Kenshin must
learn to be a single parent while still wandering Japan to atone for his sins. This a wonderful fic, with great original
characters (especially that of his daughter, Hikari) and plotlines.
Kendo no Go: A Fanfic in 100 Chapters by Akai Kitsune--this
ambitious fic loosely follows of the format of the novel "In The Language of Love" by Diane Schoemperlen. Each chapter explores
small bits of the various characters of RK, gathered around the theme of Kaoru and Kenshin's marraige. This fic is nice
for the symbolism in each chapter and the way it develops the characters without relying on a plot in the usual sense. Well
worth a look :)
Consummation by Akai Kitsune--to quote the
author: "A short sketch based on the first OVA & the manga; Tomoe's thoughts on Kenshin's marital sleeping habits. Not a
lemon/lime/anything remotely hentai in nature." This is a lovely little piece ^_^
Mysterious Rurouni by Mieren--this comedic
crossover between RK and Fushigi Yuugi has Kenshin and Saitou lost in the Universe of the Four Gods, with hilarious
results ^_^
The Rurouni's Guide to Idiocy by Gochan--to quote
the author, this is a lighter look at how the rurouni came to be ^_^ This fic is so funny it will have you breathless at
many points! After becoming a wanderer Kenshin ends up the "student" of a truly weird old man, who teaches him how to
be...well, an idiot ~_^
Rurouni Kenshin: ExtraCondensed by Gochan--this
author has a real gift for comedy, and that shines in this super-condensed (and hilarious) recap of the RK TV series ^_^
Ties of Loyalty by Unseen Watcher--Hiko is targeted
by a group of foreign thrillseekers. To quote the author, "No one messes with Hiko Seijurou the 13th. All of Japan knows
that. Too bad they didn't tell the foreigners." A great adventure fic, with fantastic Hiko/Kenshin interaction ^_^
Mentors by Unseen Watcher--What would happen
if Hiko Sejirou and Katsura Kogoro met? An interesting conversation between the two mentors of Kenshin.
They Say Cameras are Only Good for Pictures
by Karina Kineshi--The odd title refers to Sano's fear of cameras...which turns out to be justified. A camera steals his soul
and sends him to a spirit plane where alternate personalities--including Battousai--exist, and Sano's own warrior personality Zanza takes his place in
the real world. It turns out the switch was not accidental--Zanza has a mysterious agenda that includes Megumi, and it's up
to Sano to put everything, including himself, right again. This is a very well-written psychological fic, and just about everyone's
multifaceted personalities from the show make an appearance. This is truly a unique story, I highly recommend it :)
Dear Megumi: I'm still broke by Karina Kineshi--this
touching little fic is a letter Sano writes to Megumi while on his world tour after the end of the manga. What's he been
up to all time?
The Dragon and the Maiden by Colleen--this
fun fantasy fic can be summed up pretty simply: what if Kaoru was the maiden...and Kenshin the dragon? Instead of killing her
the dragon kidnaps Kaoru and takes her to his mountain cave. The next day she wakes up to find the dragon replaced by a small,
somewhat clueless red-haired man. When she finds out the truth the fun really begins :) This is a great character fic with lots of
humor and just enough romance ^_^
Of Two Minds by Colleen--this
short dream-sequence fic pits the two halves of Kenshin, rurouni and Battousai, against one another in a great little
pyschological study. If Kenshin could go back and prevent Tomoe's death...would he? This fic was really the inspiration for my
story Prism, though I ended up taking Kenshin's conflict a different route...
Sacred Sword by Zosocrowe--Zosocrowe's amazing fics
explore Kenshin's family life after the end of the manga, particularly his relationship with his son, Kenji. This is the third
(and sadly unfinished) fic in a series of three. It's time for Kenji to begin sword training, but Kenshin is torn by which school
his son should learn. A trip to Kyoto seems to be the only way to answer the question, and they run into Saitou on the train...with
his own son. Can the families of these two swordsmen get along? A wonderful character fic!
The Giant and the Lion Cub by Zosocrowe--the second story
in the series, Kenshin takes the family to Kyoto for a festival and Kenji goes missing. It's a parent's worst nightmare, but
Kenji seems to have the luck of the gods when he's rescued by none other than Hiko. But will Hiko survive the experience? Both
funny and poignant, you adore Kenji by the end of this story ^_^
A New Light by Zosocrowe--The first in the series. This
is probably the best of the "Kaoru-is-pregnant-and-
Kenshin-gets-overprotective" storylines because it presents a very realistic
picture of their marraige and how Kenshin struggles to adapt to his new role as husband and father.
Juunishi by Arashi--This fic is a hilarious crossover with
the animal-curse concept from Fruits Basket. The twelve main male characters from RK are cursed by animals spirits, and seeing
as several of them are either dating or married, it causes a problem when they have to keep their secret from the RK women -_-;;
Sano's adventures as a rooster are especially priceless, as is Saitou's fear of Tokio ^_^ A great story!
Proceed to Heaven by narie the waitress--This beautiful
short story fills the hole in the OVA timeline between Tomoe's death and Kenshin's return to their house with her body.
It's told from a unique perspective--through the eyes of the villagers Kenshin lived and worked with in Ostu.
The Darkest Shadows, the Brightest Lights by Naga--Naga
shows her talent for writing heart-stopping battle sequences with this story placed during Kenshin's time as a soldier
after Tomoe's death. The author says it best: "Bakumatsu Kyoto, 1865 - Kenshin had barely time to grieve before he was plunged
again into killings and conspiracies."
Heart of the Woman by anna-neko--Another author with
a gift for comedy, anna-neko puts Kenshin through the relationship wringer when he's visited by the ghost of Kaoru's father, who
offers him a challenge: if he can find the "heart of the woman", then Kenshin can marry his daughter. Kenshin's romantic
misadventures are great to read ;) The other fics by this author all run along similar lines actually, but I recommend reading
them because each puts a unique spin on the concept, particularly her somewhat darker fic, "The Spy and the Hitokiri".
A Moment of Growth by Marwolv--set just after
the end of Jinchuu, this story is a short but very poignant scene between Kaoru, Yahiko and Kenshin and how they are struggling to deal
with the recent events in their lives. A very insightful little fic.
Chance Meetings by Koumori--This interesting "what-if"
fic is best summed up by the author: "Okita Soushi, division captain of the Shinsen Gumi, encounters the Hitokiri Battousai twice in one day."
Battousai isn't quite what Okita assumed him to be...
Umbrella by Luriko-Ysabeth--after her marriage
to Kenshin Kaoru has an unexpected visitor at the dojo...a mysterious woman with patterned umbrella. But who is she?
The symbolism of the umbrella is well-used in this rather artistically-written fic.
The Snow Raven by Krista Perry--I highly recommend
any fic by this particular author, but this story especially is beautifully written. The author says it best: "After
months of searching and planning revenge, Yukishiro Tomoe has finally found her fiance's killer. He is nothing like she
imagined."
Weekend at Tomoe's 2 by ChaosBurnFlame--As you may
have guessed this is an RK parody of the movie, and you'll just about die laughing, especially if you dislike Tomoe and Enishi ;)
To explain any futhur would ruin it, just go read it. Trust me ;)
That Which Lingers by MadamHydra--RK blends with
the supernatural in this amazing adventure/romance epic. A mysterious sword appears to carry a curse which drives its owner
to murder and then suicide. Saitou's initial police involvement soon involves Kenshin as well when the spirit of the sword turns
out to have a connection with both swordsmens' pasts, which hide secrets no one could have predicted...
Fever Dreams by Sekihara Tae--all of Tae-san's writing is
excellent, but this fic is one of my favorites of hers :) Kenshin comes down with a serious head cold and develops a high fever. He
loses the ability to tell dream from reality, inviting Battousai to make a dramatic appearance...
Lessons by Sekihara Tae--Yahiko's relationship with
Tsubame is progressing and Kaoru decides Kenshin should give her student the "birds and the bees" talk, which leads to Kenshin
telling the story about how he learned the facts of life from Hiko...
Heart's Ease by Yumi--This fic is also by Tae-san, but
she writes lemon fics under a different pen name. This a wonderfully written adult romance between Kenshin and Kaoru placed
the night before Enishi's attack on the dojo. This fic won Best Adult Romance and Fanfic of the Year in the 2000 RK Readers'
Choice Awards.
Conquering Hiko by Yuki--This short fic fills the hole
where the Kenshin-gumi are waiting for Kenshin's return from Shishio's stronghold. Kaoru has a conversation with Hiko, leading
to interesting (and often humorous) realizations on the part of both characters.
The Kiku and the Shinai by Istoria--this is a wonderful
Kaoru-centered adventure/romance story. To quote the author: "The sword that protects, a motto Kaoru has lived her whole
life by. Now after an accident, she meets a man who will test everything she stands for."
Last Chance at Glory by Istoria--I like the
author's summary of this great Kaoru fic: "Fate has given Kaoru one last chance to restore the honor of the Kamiya Kasshin
Ryu. However the true battle is not in the tournament ring but in her own mind."
PsychologyRyu by Yamabushi--This short and very
silly (as well as very, very funny) fic makes fun of RK, because really each battle in the series boils down to
Kenshin being a psychologist in disguise -_-;;
When Push Comes to Shove by Melpomene Melancholica--This
is a great example of the "Kenshin-must-get-the-nerve-to
-admit-his-love-to-Kaoru" plotline and stands out from the crowd
through its inventive plot and great humor ^_^ Drunk one night Sano runs into an unexpected person...and is persuaded to hatch
a scheme to get K&K together. A great story!
Eyes of the Innocent by Firefury--To quote the
author: "An introspective one-shot from Kenshin's point of view. A conversation with Ayame-chan gets Kenshin thinking
about his past mistakes and memories."
Ghosts in the Snow by Jan Story--This interesting cross-over with
Ranma 1/2 has Ryoga wandering into the Forest of Barriers in the modern era...and seeing a very unusual apparition.
Hearts of Ice by Krista Perry--This amazing
epic tale is an exploration of the relationship of Ranma and Akane, and how it can transcend both time and space. Akane
is cursed by Shampoo with an ancient magic called the "Blood Spell" and is sent to the Kami Plane, where she must learn
to survive in a world of demons. Meanwhile Ranma is desperately searching for a way to bring her back, and the story only
deepens from there...
Ill Met by Starlight by Susan Doenime and Mike L.--This is
the darkest Ranma 1/2 fic I've ever read...and also one of the best. A masterfully written pyschological study, it
explores a universe where learning the Cat-Fist drove Ranma insane. To quote the authors: "Genma Saotome arrives at the
Tendo home one day, bringing his son. Despite his curse, and the misgivings of her sister, Akane takes a liking to him.
And the parade of enemies from Ranma's past begins...."
Chasing the Dragon by Madame Manga--A pregnant May
stays behind on this adventure while Rally ends up investigating criminals with Bean...and discovers more about herself
than she ever thought possible. Madame Manga's love of guns and cars really comes into play in this fic, which has amazing
detail, a great plot and fantastic character writing. Major lemon content though...younger readers beware!
The White Dog by Becky Tailweaver--All of Becky's
work is incredible, but this fic is easily the best for Inuyasha that I've read so far. Inuyasha and Kagome's relationship
is as strained as ever, but things really begin to shift when a female dog demon appears claiming that Inuyasha is heir
to his late father's dominion...and therefore ruler of all the dog demons. But what is her real agenda? This is a fantastic
romance and adventure tale which really gives depth to all the characters of Inuyasha.
Waters of the Night by Aino-kaachan--The author's
summary says it best: "An epic tale of mystery, adventure and love. Kagome must confront her awakening power as the
Inuyasha-tachi are drawn into a whirlpool of magic, treachery and danger." A beautifully written story.
Sweet Tooth by Stormlight--An adorable little
romance fic. Kagome comes up with a creative way to get Inuyasha to let her go home to the future for once...
In the Absence of Memory by mikan--In this darkly
toned fic set ten years after the end of the anime, a mysterious tragedy in the Sohma family has sent Tohru into a coma.
To bring her out of it Hatori erases all of her memories, even of her name. The Sohmas panic when she quickly vanishes...
having been kidnapped by Akito, who wishes to escape his role as the Sohma's leader and lead a normal life with Tohru. But
is that really possible, when everything around them is a lie? A beautifully written character piece.
Transitory Dance by Aishuu Shadowweaver--I like the
author's summary: "In 1996, it is Yuki’s turn to perform the New Year’s dance. The cursed Juunishi gather at the Sohma
house, and the ritual is performed. Yuki tells the story, including Kyou, Akito, Ayame, Haru, and everyone else."
Second Wind by Ysabet--Every piece by this
author is worth reading, but this fic especially is wonderfully written. Conan's secret has been discovered, and in this
third fic in a continuing series Ran's been transformed into a child as well; now both she and Conan must deal with the
consequences.
Windfall by Ysabet--A sequel to "Second Wind"
starring none other than Kaitou Kid! Ayumi gets herself a new mentor, and when a wounded Kaitou Kid appears on her
balcony, the plot begins to unfold...
Relative Truth by Becky Tailweaver--I like the
author's summary: "When your highest goal is the pursuit of the truth, what do you do when you find out your whole life is
a lie? Shinichi Kudo has to face the darkness of his past, but its secrets may shatter all his hopes for the future. And
what of Kaitou Kid...?"
Harry Potter and the Acceptance of Fate by Aryal--Set in Harry's 6th year at Hogwarts, Aryal's done a fantastic job holding to the canon laid down in the first five books while constructing her own fascinating plot. Voldemort's threat is more intense than ever, and on top of the prophecy Harry must now also deal with his newfound love for Hermione. This fic strikes a good balance between the protagonists' romantic character development and the intensifying war's effect on their lives. Warning:This story has heavy lemon content, it's definitely not for the underage crowd!
A Paradigm of Uncertainty by Lori--Lori's fics explore
the future of the Harry Potter characters, a timeline where Ron was killed by Lord Voldemort. In this romance/adventure
Harry and Hermione slowly realize that they've been in love for years...but doing something about it may be difficult in
the face of a possibly resurrected Voldemort. There is some lemon content near the end of this story, younger readers take notice!
I am Lord Voldemort by Nemesis--This beautifully
written novel-length story explores the past, present and future of Lord Voldemort in fascinating detail, expanding the
character far beyond what has so far been revealed in the first five novels.
Abstinence Education by MadameManga -- MadameManga is a long-time master at fiction, and she applies her amazing characterization and action writing skills to this story. Young Rin is fast coming into womanhood, something Manji hasn't failed to notice. His honor as her bodyguard though keeps him distant from her...that is, until she herself makes the first move. What starts out as "lessons" threatens to become something with far more reaching consquences, especially when Anotsu enters the picture once again, with a new and unexpected connection to Rin's murdered family and their shared status as samurai. This story is amazing in so many ways, and is most definitely for adults. Young readers steer clear! Rating: R/NC-17 more to come... |
